Highly available PIM system for Dataport

Dataport is the leading IT service provider for public administration in northern Germany and is responsible for the digital sovereignty of six federal states and numerous municipalities. With almost 6,000 employees and a turnover of 1.5 billion euros, the company operates highly secure data centers and develops innovative software solutions to make digitalization a tangible experience for millions of citizens.

In order to meet the complex requirements for product data management and the connection to modern e-commerce structures, scope01 implemented a comprehensive Pimcore solution including SAP connection and Shopware interface.

The Dataport project at a glance

As part of a proof of concept (POC), Dataport evaluated the optimal connection between the PIM system Pimcore and the e-commerce solution Shopware. The aim was to develop a high-performance data model that manages both internal and external products across different languages and integrates seamlessly into the existing IT infrastructure (including SAP).

The challenge: complexity and security

As an IT service provider for the public sector, Dataport places the highest demands on data security, scalability and compliance with standards. The challenge was to map an extremely extensive data model that prepares products for different sales channels in Shopware in a differentiated manner. In addition, automated processes for deployment in a data center and the exchange of data in the standardized BMECat format had to be ensured.

Our solution: A customized Pimcore setup

Infrastructure and deployment at Dataport

In order to guarantee smooth development and quality assurance, a setup with several environments (including integration, staging and production) was implemented for Dataport. scope01 provided the necessary scripts for the setup in the data center and for automated deployments and created a complete installation guide for Pimcore including all interfaces.

Data modeling and SAP integration

A core element of the project is the comprehensive data model. Both internal and external products are managed across languages. Via the data director a powerful interface to SAP was created to automatically import product data to Pimcore. Particularly complex: products maintained in Pimcore are partially split for the Shopware frontend in order to serve different sales channels in a targeted manner.

Automation and standards

  • Data migration & import profiles: Implementation of special import profiles for Dataport for the migration of products in variant structures.

  • BMECat integration: Implementation of import interfaces for supplier catalogs and export functions for retailers in the BMECat standard.

  • Backend optimization: Adaptation of the Pimcore grid views for efficient data maintenance (e.g. display of delivery times and cross-selling via FieldCollections).

  • Product configurator: Integration of a JSON-based configurator for mapping complex product logic.

Dataport focuses on security

In line with Dataport’s high requirements, specific security issues were implemented directly in Pimcore. This includes a secure process for user invitations and granular access authorizations.

The result

With the new Pimcore platform, Dataport has a central “single source of truth” for all product data. The automation of imports (SAP, BMECat) and exports (Shopware, BMECat) significantly reduces manual effort and ensures consistently high data quality for digital management.

“During the redesign of the Dataport online store, scope01 emerged as the clear winner in the market evaluation. The deciding factor was their extensive experience with Shopware and Pimcore. scope01 has impressively demonstrated how to professionally manage highly complex, highly available, and secure BSI environments. The automated daily imports and exports of extensive product data in various formats were reliably implemented. A real asset to our digitalization strategy.”
